About us
Welcome!
St Therese Convent was established in 1997 in the diocese of Peoria near Princeville. Situated in the beautiful countryside of rural Illinois, it is a setting particularly conducive to a contemplative life. This house is currently our only English-speaking convent.
Our days are dedicated to prayer, with scheduled times of community and personal prayer. The Holy Eucharist is the source and summit of our day which includes daily Mass as well as an hour of community adoration each morning and evening. Lifting up the Church and the world through our intercessory prayer for the many intentions we receive, we also pray for the vocations and missions of our apostolic brothers and sisters as well as for our lay oblates who with us form the spiritual family of St John.
We desire not only to pray but also that our whole life becomes a prayer. The simplicity of our lifestyle helps foster a silence that can help us become more open to listening to God's voice and seeking His face in life's events and in the various persons we meet. Lectio divina and praying with the word of God have an essential place in our day. Personal and community times of study, whether for initial or on-going formation, are also important. Each day we share the responsibility of ordinary tasks like cooking, cleaning, laundry, gardening, as well as yard and convent maintenance. We also make and sell various craft products to help support ourselves financially – leather Magnificat and Bible covers, other leather items, wood bead rosaries and original printed cards.

Desiring to share this prayerful and peaceful environment with persons needing silence and seeking an opportunity to renew or deepen their relationship with God, we have a guesthouse where we can welcome women, families, priests and religious for a time of personal retreat. Our chapel is open to anyone who wants to pray there, whether with us or alone. Periodically we invite families with their children for a time of adoration with us. We also welcome opportunities to share the Word of God with those who wish this.
To sum up, we wish to proclaim, by our presence and through our life, that God is always present and actively working to help people discover how much they are loved by Him, so that we and they may become, like St John, beloved disciples.
